Mobile Apps Become Major Growth Tool for Restaurants: Best Features to Include

Written by Brooks Canavesi on April 4, 2015. Posted in Blog, Mobile App Development

By virtue of the fact that we as human beings need to eat, typically 3 times per day (more like 6 for me), we often turn to restaurants to satisfy that need in the most convenient and satisfying ways we can find.  Predominantly, the search is for local businesses, but travelers rely heavily on mobile apps to steer them in a restaurant search, and the way we go about this has fundamentally changed because of the tools we have at our fingertips.  For app developers, this is a fascinating study of how emerging technology is taking hold of an ancient and timeless quest for nourishment and foods that satisfy hunger across all demographics, cultures, tastes and budgets. Industries such as entertainment, hotels, retail outlets and personal services take a back seat to restaurants when it comes to online searches, and then the statistics say that over 75% of people choose a restaurant to dine based on the results of their mobile search.

Mobile Apps Put Control of your Home Securely in Your Hands

Written by Brooks Canavesi on March 27, 2015. Posted in Blog, Mobile App Development

A category for mobile app development that is growing by leaps and bounds is home security / home automation.  This industry is experiencing one of the most dramatic growth shifts of any because it is so closely tied to the communications industry, also going through dramatic upheaval.  What is driving all the change? I propose it’s the rise of smart phones and tablets, the global shift away from voice only landline phones, and the adoption of cellular broadband technology that supports mobile applications. These are profoundly changing the way people communicate in their daily lives and the way people are interacting with alarm systems, electronics, smart devices, and appliances.  The possibilities are endless when it comes to home automation, which will eventually allow us to control every aspect of our home from our mobile devices, theoretically. CES this year was riddled with IOT (Internet of things) demos and home automation. Two of my professional peers / friends attended CES to support a client and reported back they were most excited about the advancements in home automation this year.

Today’s homes are becoming more connected as systems and appliances become smarter and mobiles and wearables are in our hands or on our wrists.  This has revolutionized the area of home automation with an increase in affordability and simplicity.   Smart phones and tablets can be made to communicate to any other devices on an ad hoc network and so the rise in mobile applications development has seen a similar explosion in growth.

Mobile App Monetization – Make It Rain

Written by Brooks Canavesi on March 25, 2015. Posted in Mobile App Development, Technology trends

2014 marked the year where there were more connected mobile devices than people on this planet. It’s pivotal to how we think about mobile application development and wearable technology. So how do you get paid as an app developer?

Entrepreneurs and developers looking to monetize apps have a few options at their disposal:
1) Pay per download (need a killer app for people to pay today)
2) In-app advertising (need a ton of users)
3) In-app purchases
4) Freemium version
5) Free – sell user data (need millions of users to play this card)

Remember nothing is free in the mobile app world.
A wise man once told me: If something is “Free” to you, then “You” are the product! #sageadvice

This Ipad has not been backed up for two weeks

Written by Brooks Canavesi on March 2, 2015. Posted in Blog, Technology Tips & Tricks

icloud backup message in ipad

Have you ever received this message on your ipad “Icloud Backup” “This Ipad has not been backed up for two weeks. Backup happens when ipad is plugged in, locked, and connected to wifi”

Two things you can do to solve your nagging message:

1.) Plug in your ipad, connect to wifi, go to: Settings >> iCloud >>Storage & Backup >>Click “Back Up Now”

OR

2) If the message still persists, which seems to be a bug on some iPads, then a reset should help. Tap and hold the Home button and the On/Off button at the same time for approximately 10-15 seconds, until the Apple logo appears. When the logo appears, release both buttons and await restart. No content will be affected.

Hope this helps those scratching their heads when your iPad nags you (in a good way).

Misconception 2005 Labor Day Video

Written by Brooks Canavesi on February 15, 2015. Posted in Personal

Yes I’m aware it is 2015 and I’m posting a video that is a decade old, but I finally had a little time and remembered I could use handbrake on my macbook pro to rip the old DVD some friends and I made and post it on YouTube. I hope to get more stuff up soon and hopefully some higher definition and newer stuff soon. This was my very first iMovie project that lead to quite a few wedding videos for friends and family. Nothing major like chase boats or jet skis, all shot from the back of the boat, but still some really good memories with our friends and family. Hopefully no film snobs tell me how it could be better. This was posted to create an archive of some fond memories.
